Lewis (Erwin)'s Story
Life
I graduated at Carthage H.S.-1954. Enlisted USAF on Sept 1, 1954 and was Honorably Discharge May 1, 1958. After my military service I worked in Dallas a year, moved back to Carthage and worked in Shreveport, LA 1 year at the J.B. Beaird Mfg. Co. College: Louisiana Polytechnic Institute (currently known as: Louisiana Tech University)Ruston, LA. Completed 2 1/2 years, got married my 1st semester.
After college, I became a Policeman, City of Ruston, Ruston, LA. Served on the police department 3 years. We then moved to Huntsville, AL in July 1966. In Huntsville, I began my Federal Civil
Service career. In 1973, my wife(Ex)and I were transferred to Houston, we divorced in 1982. In 1985, I tranferred to San Antonio, TX after receiving a promotion. I lived there until Jun 1992. I moved to Orlando, FL for another promotion, where I worked until I retired in October 1994. I returned to San Antonio, TX to live. I have two children: Sonya (Daughter) and David (Son). nited State Air Force from September 1,1954 through May 1, 1958. Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base (AFB), San Antonio, Texas (Sep 1, 1954 to Nov 15, 1954), then
transferred to George Air Forcwe Base, Victorville, California (Nov 1954 until May 1, 1958). The following was my duty assignment while at George AFB. I was the Chief Clerk in the Headquarters 413th Fighter-Day Group, which later became the 413th Fighter-Day Wing.
There were three orignal Fighter Squadrons under the Wing, the 1st
Fighter-Day, 21st Fighter-Day, and 34th Figher-Day. Once the Group became a Wing a Headquarters Squadron was added. I served under Colonel George Laven, Colonel Long, and Colonel Blood. Colonel
Laven was the first Commander of the 413th Fighter-Day Group. He then became the Base Commander and remained the Base
Commander until my Discharge in May 1954. I worked in the Adjutant's office my entire enlistment, except for my 11 weeks Basic Training at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas.
